New Directions in Health Psychology (Sage Publications) Edited by Michael Murray & Kerry Chamberlain

We are currently compiling a compendium of significant work in health psychology published over the past 20 years or so. This collection will be entitled New Directions in Health Psychology and will consist of five volumes to be published by Sage in the series SAGE Benchmarks in Psychology.
The papers to be included must be peer-reviewed articles or chapters that have made a significant contribution to health psychology in terms of one or more of the following:
  • raised important new ideas;
  • developed important new theoretical approaches;
  • surveyed a significant body of work to propose new directions or insights;
  • contributed to important advances in methodologies or methods;
  • contributed to significant innovations in healthcare systems;
  • or led to significant advances in health psychology applications, and so on.

We intend to cover the entire field of health psychology research and practice.

We have been searching databases for important publications but would be keen to hear what list members think are important.  We would be grateful if you could spare a few minutes to look through your own publications, reading and reference lists, and any databases to help us identify these key papers. Please send details of any published work that you feel has been particularly important to the discipline over the past 20 years, by email to both of us at and

We look forward to receiving your suggestions to this important collection, which we are sure will make an important contribution to the future development of health psychology.

Many thanks,

Michael Murray (Keele University, UK) and Kerry Chamberlain (Massey University, NZ)
