Researcher job opportunity: Weightwatchers

Research Associate (Social Scientist)
Salary: £27,578 - £35,938 pa. Unit: Department of Public Health and Primary Care. *Limited Funding
The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team on a multi-centre randomised controlled trial of weight loss interventions in primary care, recently funded by the National Prevention Research Initiative. The post-holder will be based in Cambridge and will take a lead role in the design, conduct and analysis of the qualitative work-stream which is likely to consist of interviews and direct observation of weight loss initiatives (specifically, Weightwatchers). The post-holder will work with the Investigators to identify key research questions and appropriate methodologies. It is anticipated that the project will be largely ethnographic. They will be expected to conduct the fieldwork with considerable independence and will analyse and interpret the data alongside other team members. This role will require knowledge and skills in both qualitative research methods and, ideally, obesity research.

Time will be split 50/50 across the Primary Care Unit and MRC Human Nutrition Research, located about 2 miles apart, to reflect the nature of the post and ensure the post-holder becomes embedded in the work at both institutions. Regular meetings and joint appraisals will be held with both supervisors. Candidates are expected to be well organised, capable of using their own initiative, and be able to work to deadlines. Excellent communication with the rest of the research team, as well as participants, participating practices and other stakeholders is essential to the role.

The University has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.
